Listening to Tank and the Bangas's Rhythmn of Life, the headliner for RiverJam Bayou Classic After-Game Event on the Natchez Riverboat -- the coolest, sexiest fundraising cruise to hit the Mississippi River in the name of college scholarships.

Join 100 Black Men of Metro New Orleans Inc. on Saturday, November 30th, 2013 - 6 pm VIP reception; 7 pm boarding and 7:30 pm departure.  Tickets are $50.

I'm planning to let my hair down for Bayou Classic.

I caught a glimpse of the headline band for 100 Black Men of Metro New Orleans Inc.'s RiverJam on Saturday, Nov. 30th, 2013, 6-10 PM, following the Bayou Classic and true to name, this group bangs:

Tank and the Bangas headlines RiverJam.

Yes, gawd! as some of my fellow bloggers say. This group is the real deal, giving off Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Macy Gray.  Soul. Funk. Old School R&B. Electric.  And what pleases any New Orleans crowd, Maze.  They've got all the genres down pat.

You have to experience the rapture, the intensity and the energy of this awesome group.  These stars are born.  They give you this sense that any minute they are going to blow up.

Coming to The City of New Orleans Thanksgiving Week

Bayou Classic is a big deal!  Even if you didn't go to one of these HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities), the whole city gets drawn into the rivalry.  There's a whole week of great activities (golf tournament, Thanksgiving Day parade, Battle of the Marching Bands, concerts and more).

I am particularly excited about 100 Black Men of Metro New Orleans Inc. joining forces with the Classic to provide scholarships to needy students.  Have you checked the costs lately? not even middle class families can afford the price of colleges.

After the game on Saturday, November 30th, 6 pm, the 100s are presenting RiverJam -- probably the coolest, sexiest live music steamboat cruise along the Mississippi River to raise funds for its educational initiatives and scholarship fund.

It's nothing like a good party for a good cause. Tell 'em, gigi sent you.

Bayou Classic is gearing up in The City of New Orleans and 100 Black Men of Metro New Orleans Inc. is presenting RiverJam-- a cool, sexy boat cruise along the Mississippi River to raise money for education of area youth. I happen to know that the organizers have a dynamic line up in store.  If you're a fan of Neo-soul, then you will be blown away by this one banging group, no pun intended. It's like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Angie Stone all rolled into one meets the movie Love Jones. I can't wait for this event.

On the come up!

On the come up!

On the come up! by oecomm featuring a leather satchel

As I look back over the last year at my business aspirations, this has been a lot of hard work -- the hardest in mounting my own fears and insecurities.  For the most part, the journey feels similar to that of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.  And I, for one, know that I would not have been able to face down many of these dreadful creatures if I didn't have Fashion.  There is great Power in Fashion -- and Magic!  That's what Dorothy's shoes are about.  I want to thank all you who follow this blog.  It helps me to know that I am not alone in the world and that I am not a wantrepreneur.  I can measure the real steps I'm taking to make my dream reality:

Ok...alright...I'm so excited. I can hardly contain myself, no punt intended.  Things feel like they are on the move.  Timing, my good friends.  That's all I will say for the moment.  You want it, you prepare for it, you go for it and still you might find yourself running into a wall: go around it, go under it, go over it.  Something will give or something else that's in store for you will become visible.  I promise to let the cat out the bag soon enough.

Here I Come!

Untitled #20

Untitled #20 by oecomm featuring nicholas kirkwood

Celia Cruz's last song.

I dance to La Negra Tiene Tumbao after watching a CSPAN lecture on modern-day slavery by Siddhartha Kara.

He made me weigh the matters of class, gender, ethnicity on my business undertaking. Who's world is this? Where do I fall?  Forty percent of the world's population is either enslaved or bonded labor.

"There are deliberate, malicious forces working around the clock to keep you in your lot in life," he said. "You can't see them, but feel them as lack and poverty.  Economic disenfranchisement denies biased groups access to formal credit or capital."

Hey, he's talking about me:  How easily can I really go to a bank and walk out with a line of credit, no matter how solid my business plan?

It's super important to remember initiatives like SLSBC which address disparities, bring resources and  create access. You have to believe in what you're setting out do (a s-hero's journey) and let nothing, no one stand in your way, stop you, including you.

I Salsa to that!

Believe it or not, I am working this week. I'm coming out of an extremely relaxed weekend.  I am borrowed advice from Tony Robbins: Don't let fear control you. Like race car drivers, look not at the wall but to the open road to prevent from crashing.

I looked good in this outfit.  I decided to host a quick, impromptu garden lunch.  The response was fabulous.  Apparently, food is an excellent lure for picking people's brains.  It didn't hurt that word got out that I can prepare some pretty amazing dishes. Inspired by Chef Roble's food truck theme this week, I whipped up a quick grilled shrimp avocado salad with lime dressing, tortilla chips, salmon quesadillas and raspberry ice tea.  I think I just jumped started my business network.

My Summer Reading.

This is my all-time favorite reading, Pecan Candy and Huck-a-bucks
The setting is in New Orleans and I just love the characters. I can't get enough of them.
You will just fall in love with everything about the story which reads like gumbo.

Treat yourself to this delicious reading!

Serious Relaxation

Serious Relaxation

Serious Relaxation by oecomm on Polyvore
I must have died because I went to Florida. The place is heaven!  I could live there forever.  We stayed in a luxurious villa that comfortably accommodated 10 people and a puppy. It felt so good to get away from my troubles.  The world you live in will not fall apart because you take a break.  I feel refreshed and ready to jump into my action plan.

Getting Ready for Summer!

Getting Ready for Summer!

Getting Ready for Summer! by oecomm featuring clear sunglasses

Getting Ready for summer and looking forward to a little R&R. I'm taking off with friends for some fun in the sun. When I get back I plan to move on some of my action items for the business: like incorporating, setting up a bank account.  I think I've gotten beyond the point of having everything all perfect and in place before I get started.  Something my mother says rings in my ears, you have to crawl before  you walk.  No, I won't have the perfect office set up and my desk may be plywood board stacked on top of boxes. But I will have improvised and gotten the ball in motion.  That's really what it's about: getting started; having movement.

Moment of Silence

Moment of Silence by oecomm on Polyvore
Taking a moment of silence for the horrific news events this past week:  Makes you stop and look outside of your day-to-day self-absorption.  My heart goes out to innocent victims. Peace, please.

I realize I've been missing from the blogosphere for a minute.  I'm still organizing, getting my ish together.  I've come face-to-face with some of my fears, real dragons of self-doubt.  Deep stuff that you consciously might know is affecting you.  Things that go back to parents and grade school.  All of this from going through my closet. So in terms of my aspirations, I'm fine-tuning my plans and goals. I'm planning to drop it on you real soon. Hint: passport.

Going through my closet and sorting through things.  I read somewhere that if you really want to get on top of things in your life, start there.  I realize it sounds a lot like procrastination  Am I any closer to my dreams manifesting?  If we count inches and centimeters.

Making Room for the New

I had the holiday spirit and spent time with friends and family. I'm going through my things, discarding what I don't need and making room for the new.
